Exinda Puts Stake Through Heart of Zombie Attacks.
Melbourne-based global Application Traffic Management expert Exinda Networks has adapted its Optimizer technology to stop the PC Zombie army from attacking its clients computers.
Armies of zombie PCs in homes and small businesses pose the biggest threat to big business and government IT networks according to 2005 Australian Computer Crime and Security Survey.
It found more than 30 per cent of all businesses surveyed had been attacked in 2004 with one company losing $8 million as a result.
However Exinda Networks Director Mr Con Nikolouzakis said Zombie attacks could be stopped in 100 per cent of cases using an Exinda Optimizer.
Exinda's stake through the heart of the Zombie attacks is its layer 7 packet inspection that is built into all Exinda Optimizer products.
As part of the Quality of Service mechanism, Exindas layer 7 packet inspection engine analyses the contents of each data packet entering the network. Unwanted and malicious applications can work over TCP port 80 and appear to be HTTP,: he said.
Mr Nikolouzakis said some applications allocate ports dynamically and even randomly port swap so there is no way of knowing what they are, based purely on traditional methods (such as port number), unless you have the benefit of layer 7 packet inspection. Most firewalls allow these zombie and peerto- peer traffic through.
You need never be scared of Zombie attacks again, the Optimizer allows you to peer into your network operations, discard unwanted traffic, shape internet access and make your network applications run up to 400 per cent faster, he said. Cost benefit analysis of the security and optimization features proves very compelling.
When there is an attack, be it virus, hacker or zombie, the Optimizer can significantly decrease the impact to network applications like VoIP, Citrix and SAP. We are seeing more Security Providers taking on our products and repositioning themselves as Business Continuity Providers.
The recent Australian Computer Crime survey reported more often than ever PCs from home and small business are being conscripted into an army of infected zombie PCs to threaten Denial of Service (DoS). They are then used to attack big business and government causing substantial operational grief and financial pain.
The survey results indicated that fifty per cent of the 540 enterprises surveyed spent five per cent of their total IT budget on security issues in 2004 but most were unsatisfied with their levels of security today.
More than one in three big businesses suffered an electronic attack last year, so DoS attacks now are a likelihood in corporate life. Today the deployment of network traffic management and optimisation is a must have rather than an option for large networks.
And as these results show, small business networks, too, can take advantage of an appropriate Optimizer, especially if SME owners want to lock out the attacks on their PCs and avoid the taking over of their PCs to form part of that noxious army, said Mr Nikolouzakis.
