:: Exinda Networks Launches Unified Performance Management

Exinda Networks, the only provider worldwide of fully integrated WAN optimization and application acceleration platforms, announced the launch of Unified Performance Management (UPM), designed to maximize the performance of all IP communications beyond the boundaries of the local area network (LAN).

UPM defines the key components required to effectively manage the performance of a wide breadth of applications that organizations use to do their business across wide area networks (WANs).  UPM incorporates WAN optimization, Application Acceleration, Application Visibility, Application Response Time Measurement and a global management facility.

UPM sets benchmarks in performance, functionality, cost-effectiveness and the availability of fully integrated WAN Acceleration platforms for the small branch office through to Data Center and HQ Gigabit systems.

:: Exinda Growth

Team Exinda continues its rapid growth adding many new distribution and reseller partners worldwide.  A hearty welcome goes to TLK in Germany, Ariantec in Malaysia and Round Robin in India.

Exinda's UPM WAN Acceleration “whole of market” strategy is also paying dividends for our reseller partners, with Australian managed services partner VOIP, Telecom New Zealand subsidiary Gen-I and Pan-Asian integrator Agile One now ramping up their WAN performance products and services offerings with Exinda.

Exinda's management team also continues to expand to support our fast growing distribution channel.  We have two new vice presidents:

Jim Christie - Vice President of Worldwide Sales - Jim Christie will be responsible for developing Exinda's global sales team.  Christie will ensure customer and partner satisfaction remains high as the organization manages its quarter by quarter double digit growth.  Christie has more than 25 years of experience in the information technology industry and has achieved great success in sales and managing growth.

Paul Laracy – Vice President of Sales for the Americas - Paul Laracy will be responsible for growing and managing Exinda's distribution program in North, Central and South America.  Laracy brings a wealth of experience in managing all aspects of channel partner relationships.  He is based in Boston, Massachusetts.

Technical Update

The importance of Layer 7 classification in WAN Acceleration

"It is simply not possible to rely on port numbers in order to determine what applications are running on a network. Standard applications can run on non-standard ports, malicious or bandwidth hungry applications can run on random ports or standard ports pretending to be another application, and some applications spawn child connections on random ports. Making network infrastructure decisions or enforcing Quality of Service becomes impossible without knowing exactly what’s running on the network. "
John Bothe, Senior Product Architect, Exinda Networks.

Although acceleration across the WAN eliminates repetitive data and improves application performance, L7 classification and control ensures that unwanted traffic is off your network. Streaming, P2P and other recreational applications can quickly take up WAN resources creating congestion even on a WAN with acceleration enabled. Exinda L7 helps keep the WAN clean to deliver consistent and predictable application acceleration.

Exinda L7 Discovery

Exinda uses L7 signatures in conjunction with advanced pattern matching technology and proprietary connection analysis technology to discover applications at layer 7. The Exinda L7 discovery system provides the following benefits.

  • Discovery of applications running on non-standard ports (e.g. HTTP over ports other than 80).
  • Discovery of applications using seemingly random ports (e.g. P2P).
  • Discovery of applications pretending to be another application by deliberately using standard ports (e.g. P2P, steaming, IM over HTTP, port 80).
  • Discovery of applications that spawn child connections on random ports (e.g. FTP, SIP).

Layer 7 discovery happens in real-time, at wire-speed, allowing the Exinda appliance to instantly classify connections and take the appropriate action based on configured policies. All Exinda appliances support L7 discovery. The Exinda 6720 includes a high-speed L7 discovery engine embedded in ASIC-based hardware. This enables the Exinda 6720 to deliver all the benefits of L7 discovery on “power networks” and 1G speeds, without compromising network performance.

Application Specific Analysis Module

ASAM provides a modular based framework whereby analysis modules for specific applications can be installed, providing immediate visibility at Layer 7 into the specific characteristics of an application. Currently, 3 modules exist, and provide the following information. URL's for HTTP traffic, Published Application for Citrix and a host of details such as phone numbers, codec & call duration for SIP based voice.
